Writing an 'auto-biography'
Author teaches children history through the eyes of a Model T Ford

"T: An Auto-Biography," a new children's book, was formally launched by author Feather Schwartz Foster at the Scotch Plains Library on April 21.
About 50 people attended Foster's two presentations about the book, which the author describes as "Black Beauty on wheels."
In her talk, Foster said, "The book tells of the life and times of a Model T car from its 'birth,' right off Henry Ford's assembly line in the early 1920s, through the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, World War II and a stint as a demolition car in the 1950s. It's a great book for children, parents and, particularly, grandparents. I think it will trigger many memories in the minds of the grandparents as they read the book to their grandchildren."
The book is aimed at children in grades 3 through 8. Critics have called it "a charming, adventurous, imaginative read that gently weaves in a bit of history."
Foster calls herself an amateur historian and has completed two historical fiction novels for adults. "Ladies: A Conjecture of Personalities" is about first ladies, from Martha Washington to Mamie Eisenhower, holding conversations across time. "Garfield's Train" is about the death of President Garfield, which occurred in Long Branch. She is currently working on another book about presidential history.
Foster began her writing career after taking an early retirement following the 9/11 tragedy.
"After 30 years or so in advertising and public relations, I decided to pursue something I have always loved -- writing," she said. "I combined my love of writing with another important interest of mine -- history -- and soon completed two historical novels. In the past, I had also written several children's songs and plays that were performed all over New Jersey, so it was natural that I would eventually write a children's book."
Foster encouraged other seniors to follow her lead. "After all, that's why we are alive -- to do what we really want to do," she said. "And, what better time to do it than right now?"
She added, "You shouldn't be a prisoner inside yourself. Press on. Get on with it. Enjoy life, because the more you enjoy life, the more of life there is to enjoy."
Foster tours locally to promote her books and is also available for speaking engagements.
"I really enjoy talking to people, particularly to some of the senior organizations," she said.
"T: An Auto-Biography" is available online and at bookstores for $9.95. Inscribed and autographed copies also are available through the author's Web site, www.f eatherfoster.com.
